Cover Letter

Back to Jobseeker Tips

A cover letter is designed to interest the employer in looking at your resume. It should be a brief – maximum of six short paragraphs – explanation of why you are perfect for the job.

However, don’t just cut and paste from your CV. Your CV is a complete list of all relevant skills and experience, which is read in reverse chronological order, and where education or professional development is often not visible on the first page. The cover letter picks out key attributes regardless of whether they’re educational, achievements or simply interests. For example:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to apply for the HR Project Manager position you are advertising on AHRI’s HRcareers website. Allow me to pick out three points from my attached CV which illustrate how I possess the experience and skills you seek.

You ask for finely honed project management skills, and I have a track record of managing large-scale projects, including the roll out of a new set of organisational values for Big Bank plc.

Also, you ask for candidates with an appreciation of the role of psychology within HRM, and I have attended several masterclasses with noted figures in this field, including Martin Seligman. I have been putting what I learned to good use in my present position with Bigger Bank plc.

Finally, I have all the expertise in internal communication you require, having spent a total of four years of my career engaged in successful projects in this field.

I look forward to meeting you to discuss my experience.

Yours faithfully,

Andrea
